Share your story

Thank you for showing an interest in sharing your personal journey as a Bahá’í.

The UK Bahá’í Histories Project, launched in 1990, aims to collect and preserve the unique stories of individuals and families who have embraced the Bahá’í Faith. Your contribution will help inspire others and enrich our collective history.

Writing Your Story

If possible, write your own story. If you prefer, you may ask someone to interview you and write it on your behalf.

How to Begin

Start by describing how you became a Bahá’í.  If you were born into a Bahá’í family, share your experiences growing up in the community and whether anything influenced your decision to adopt the Faith.

If you wish, include significant events or aspects of your life since then.

Even a single page is valuable, don’t hesitate to begin!  You can always add to your story in the future – indeed we encourage it.

General Tips:

  • Share specific anecdotes: Personal stories and vivid details are more engaging than general statements.
  • Express your feelings: Describe how you felt at the time, as well as how you feel now.
  • Your story matters: What’s familiar to you may be fascinating to readers. Consider sharing your draft with a friend for feedback, they may encourage you to expand or explain parts of your story.

What to Include

How I Became a Bahá’í:

  • Brief background and upbringing (including any religious influences).
  • How you learned about the Bahá’í Faith and what attracted you.
  • What changed in your life after becoming a Bahá’í.
  • How your faith affected your home, work, and social life.
  • Reactions of friends and family.

My Bahá’í Life:

  • Experiences in the Bahá’í community (teaching, children’s classes, service).
  • Participation in events (Summer Schools, pilgrimage, conferences, special occasions).
  • Friendships and connections formed.
  • Times when your faith supported you through challenges or brought you joy.
  • Key turning points in your journey.

After Writing

Permission to Publish:

  • Please let us know if you are happy for your story to be published (online or in print).
  • If you prefer your story to remain private, it will be kept in the UK Bahá’í Community’s archives and not shared.
  • You can change your permission at any time.

Consider Others’ Perspectives:

  • Think about how people mentioned in your story might feel.
  • Would they prefer to remain anonymous?
  • Does your story present the Bahá’í Faith accurately, especially for readers new to the Faith?

Including Photos

Photos make your story more engaging! Please include at least a recent photo of yourself.

If possible, add photos from earlier years, especially around the time you became a Bahá’í.

Please send photos in electronic format (JPG or PNG). If you only have paper photos, try to get a clear, high-quality scan.

Please avoid selfies—ask a friend or family member to take your photo if needed.
